ZEN PROGRAM
WHAT IS ZEN?
The mind/body discipline transmitted by Zen Buddhism has been passed down from teacher to student in India, China, Japan, and now the United States, for over two thousand years. Zen meditation combines posture, breathing and meditative technique to develop relaxation, a clear, concentrated mind, and spiritual insight. The basic questions of existence – “who am I?”, “what is life?”, “why am I here?” – these are the questions that Zen addresses. A person who can courageously and with patience seek answers to these questions through deep practice is one who can gain the benefits of Zen: compassion for others, calm and focus in the face of hardship, wisdom, and a deep sense of peace amidst the turmoil of daily life.
IS ZEN A RELIGION?
Although the teachings of Zen have been passed down as one stream within the great river of philosophy and practice called Buddhism, Zen itself is not a religion in the western sense. Rather, it is a systematic practice of deeply exploring and seeing the true foundations of your own existence. There are no beliefs or doctrines required to practice Zen meditation other than the belief that it may help you! If you are a Buddhist or interested in Buddhism, Zen can help you understand the essence of that tradition. If you have other religious beliefs or a spiritual path, the practice of Zen can help you to develop a greater understanding of what it actually means to be “religious” or “spiritual” and to more fully live a life in accord with your own beliefs. Persons of any background are welcome to practice meditation with us, and you do not need to convert to Buddhism, or any other kind of ‘-ism’, in order to gain benefit from this practice.
HOW DO I BEGIN TRAINING?
The group meeting at the Kyoseikan Dojo meets regularly to practice Zen meditation,
discuss Zen principles and ideas, and to share experiences.
Beginners are
always welcome and will receive instruction in Zen meditation. The group is being
sponsored by Sokei-zan Daiyuzenji Zen Temple located in Chicago, Illinois. A Zen
monk from that temple will periodically visit our meetings to guide our practice,
give talks, and share his experiences.
You can join the group by registering through this website or by contacting Mr. Kevin Holohan directly by email or telephone.
